Cornerstone Superstar: Central Maine Power
Central Maine Power Company (CMP), which delivers electricity to more than 630,000 customers in central and southern Maine each year, supports the community in more ways than one.
Under the leadership of CMP President and CEO Doug Herling and with the efforts of a company-wide fundraising team, the company, its affiliate Avangrid Foundation, and CMP employees pledged to donate $51,261 to United Way of Kennebec Valley in 2019--a 66 percent increase over last year’s contributions. CMP also increased staff participation in giving by 90 percent. In 2019, CMP’s collective efforts earned the company United Way’s Large Business Partner of the Year Award.
This gift positions CMP as one of 12 Cornerstone Partners, which collectively make up more than 53 percent of UWKV’s annual campaign. These 12 companies most recently contributed more than $900,000 to the Kennebec Valley community. With CMP’s support, United Way increased its overall fundraising total by 5 percent, raising a record-breaking $1,745,000 for 48 local nonprofit organizations.
CMP is committed to providing safe and reliable service to residential and business customers across its 11,000-square-mile service area ensuring prompt response and recovery from storms and other outages. The company employs a total of 1,100 people across its facilities, including regional service centers, garages, offices and other property.
Beyond contributing to United Way’s annual campaign, CMP has been a reliable partner on initiatives like the fall school supply collection, food pantry program and more. Several CMP employees have also served on United Way’s Board of Directors and various committees.
In addition to United Way, CMP supports many other community needs through corporate sponsorship and community service programs. The company hosts an annual mitten drive, donates 600 children’s books to local libraries each year, and makes donations to other programs that benefit the neighborhoods in which staff live and work.
