Norm Temple Community Volunteer Recipient - Domingo Cheleuitte
Congratulations, Domingo Cheleuitte from Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LVA) on being recognized as a recipient for the Norm Temple Community Volunteer Award! Domingo Cheleuitte began volunteering with Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta in November 2019 to help the organization improve digital literacy for both tutors and learners. In early January 2020, Domingo was volunteering his time by offering “Technology Thursdays” at the LVA office—a drop-in opportunity for tutors to learn technology skills that would put them in a better place to help learners build technology capacity. An in- person technology training session was also planned in March 2020 for all tutors, however, needed to be cancelled due to Covid-19.
This did not stop Domingo; he came up with an extensive proposal to the LVA Board of Directors to develop a plan to provide tutors and learners with their own tablets (along with training and tech support). This completely altered LVA’s approach to tutoring, and now tutor pairs are learning virtually and gaining digital literacy skills, and learners have new incentives to learn. In July of 2020, Domingo was hired as a part-time Technology Consultant by LVA to further build this tablet program. LVA is deeply grateful for his expertise, compassion, and commitment to literacy. Little did LVA know when Domingo first started to volunteer his technology skills how critical they would become.
Thank you, Domingo!
