Partner Spotlight: Alzheimer's Care Center
The Adult Day Program at the Alzheimer’s Care Center in Gardiner has been a lifesaver for Dari Lee Zagwyn, whose husband Ted was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s last September.
Also known as “The Club,” the Adult Day Program serves people with Alzheimer’s or other dementia or memory loss who can benefit from supervision and socialization during the day. It gives caregivers like Dari Lee the freedom to go to work, run errands and have time for themselves. The program also offers a support group for caregivers.
Ted comes to the Club every day and loves the range of activities, the kind staff and the camaraderie among his fellow Club members. Dari Lee loves seeing the smile on his face when he sees his best friend Lou, and she is very grateful for The Club. “It gives me peace of mind knowing Ted is in a safe place that he loves to come to. He never had hobbies or best friends because he loved his work so much. He’s found both of those things at The Club.”
“Dementia is a journey for both the caregiver and the patient, and it’s not an easy one,” Dari Lee added. “Thank goodness for The Club. Ted is continuing to flourish surrounded by caring people who treat him with respect, and I get the support I need from other caregivers who are on this same journey.”
United Way funding helps the Adult Day Program provide transportation to and from community activities, as well as offers respite care for patients when caregivers cannot be available due to illness or another emergency.
