United Way of
Kennebec Valley is...
AUGUSTA, ME – United Way of Kennebec Valley (UWKV) has been made aware of a serious incident involving one of our previously funded partner organizations, Crisis & Counseling Centers (C&C), which closed its doors in 2024. Recent developments reveal that a C&C employee allegedly embezzled funds from the organization over a period of several years. We are deeply concerned by this situation and want to assure the community, our donors, and partners that UWKV is in no way connected to these actions.
UWKV is committed to the highest standards of financial oversight and accountability. Our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers conduct rigorous evaluations and due diligence when assessing financial reports provided to us by organizations applying for funding. These processes are designed to ensure that the funds entrusted to UWKV by our donors are used in a responsible and impactful manner.
UWKV has not funded C&C since 2024. We will collaborate with relevant authorities to understand the full scope of the situation as needed. Our first priority is to safeguard the integrity of our work and the trust placed in us by the community.
We want to emphasize that this incident at C&C is in no way related to UWKV’s operations. Our organization remains transparent, committed to accountability, and dedicated to supporting programs that make a positive difference in the Kennebec Valley region. To see UWKV’s most recent audited financial statements, IRS Form 990, and annual reports, we encourage you to visit the Accountability & Financials page on our website. We also invite you to view our profiles on GuideStar/Candid and Charity Navigator—nonprofit watchdog platforms on which we maintain the highest-possible ratings of “platinum” and “four-star,” respectively.
We deeply value the trust of our donors, partners, and the broader community, which is why we want to be clear with you regarding UWKV’s immediate response to this incident. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that your contributions are directed toward programs that create lasting change.
