United Way of
Kennebec Valley is...
AUGUSTA — United Way of Kennebec Valley (UWKV) has appointed Jared and Vivian Mills, an Augusta couple with deep roots in community service, as campaign co-chairs for the 2025 fundraising season kicking off in August. The Mills will lead the campaign during UWKV’s 70th anniversary, a year of reflection and growth for the organization.
Dedicated Community Advocates to Lead the Charge
“It is an honor to serve as Campaign Co-Chair during such a historic year for United Way,” said Jared Mills. “This organization has made an extraordinary impact on our community, and I’m excited to continue that legacy by connecting more people with the resources they need to succeed.”
Jared, a lifelong Mainer with decades in municipal service including his current role as Augusta City Manager (serving as a community volunteer in this role), and Vivian Mills, a nurse at MaineGeneral Health with over a decade of healthcare experience focused on community health, bring a wealth of experience and passion to their new roles.
Focus on Kennebec County’s ALICE Population
This year, the campaign will focus on Kennebec County’s ALICE population — households that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed. These hardworking individuals hold jobs yet struggle to afford basic living expenses like housing, childcare, food and healthcare. In Kennebec County, 41% of households fall below the ALICE threshold.
“Supporting our neighbors is my highest priority,” Jared said. “United Way’s work is essential to the vitality of our community, and I’m eager to leverage my experience to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
Vivian added, “It’s critical that we expand our reach to ensure that those struggling to make ends meet have access to the help they need. The opportunity to give back and make a real difference is one of the reasons I’m excited to be part of this campaign.”
Building on a Strong Foundation of Community Support
United Way’s annual fundraising efforts engage over 163 local businesses and more than 4,000 donors. Last year, these efforts raised over $2 million, supporting 58 nonprofit and school-based programs throughout Kennebec County. With the backing of Campaign Champions, Jared and Vivian Mills aim to expand the donor base to address the growing needs of local families.
Celebrating 70 Years and Honoring Community Heroes
As part of the 70th anniversary celebration, United Way will be recognizing 70 Community Heroes, individuals who have made a meaningful difference in Kennebec County, and sharing 70 Stories of Impact that showcase how United Way has transformed lives over the past seven decades.
