Partner Program Spotlight – Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation

The following success story was submitted by Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation (SKCDC). Dollars given to United Way of Kennebec Valley support this program as well as many others across Kennebec Valley.

Brian experienced significant trauma at a very young age. He and his mother were victims of domestic violence, and he suffered bone fractures and other injuries at the hands of his now-incarcerated father. For a time, Brian lived in kinship care. His mother, determined to create a better life, found legal support, secured a safe home, and found employment. At 18 months old, Brian enrolled in the Early Head Start program, and as a four-year-old, he now attends the Head Start preschool program.

During their time with SKCDC, staff have supported the family in many ways, including helping them become customers of the local food bank and establishing a childcare subsidy. Staff have also assisted them with accessing dental care, follow-up hearing assessments, and developmental screenings for Brian.

Recently, the family experienced financial challenges due to illness and missed work because Brian needed to have a scheduled surgery. Thanks to United Way funding, they were able to provide Brian with continuity of care and a regular school routine, allowing his mom to get caught up on her bills. Brian is now getting the support he needs at Magic Years.
