Our business partners go above and beyond every year
Every year, United Way of Kennebec Valley presents awards to the top-performing fundraisers in the area. In late 2017, United Way revamped its award structure to better align with the agency's goals. Award winners are selected by our Campaign Chairs and Campaign Committee each year and presented at our Campaign Celebration.

Charlie's Family of Dealerships
Charlie’s Family of Dealerships' multifaceted support of United Way has been instrumental to the campaign’s overall success. Under the leadership of campaign co-chairs, Steve Shuman and Elissa Shuman Emmons, Charlie's increased staff participation and total giving, resulting in the first business to ever crest the $200,000 mark. This award is given to a company with 35+ employees that has demonstrated outstanding United Way leadership.
SMALL BUSINESS PARTNER OF THE YEAR
A Partner in Technology
A Partner in Technology (API) demonstrated exceptional leadership, support, and commitment to the mission and values of United Way during the 2019 campaign. API not only had 100 percent participation with a leadership match but also provided crucial technology support for the campaign. This award is given to a company with up to 34 employees that has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to United Way’s mission.
Public service PARTNER OF THE YEAR
Alan Smith, former executive director of Augusta Food Bank
This award is given to a nonprofit or government partner who has supported the campaign in new or stronger ways. During the 2019 campaign, Alan went above and beyond by sharing Augusta Food Bank's work with 12 workplace campaign kickoffs, contributing a significant amount of time and resulting in several increases to workplace giving.
CHAIRPERSON'S recognition award
Campaign Chairs Steve Shuman and Elissa Shuman Emmons present this award to Team EJP for the company's outstanding contributions to the community through United Way. In particular, Team EJP completely revamped its campaign procedure—bringing the United Way message to 27 locations across the country with a team of 10+ employees working together to increase participation in both workplace giving and volunteerism. This award is given annually to an entity that truly exemplifies what it means to LIVE UNITED.
Employee Campaign Managers of the Year
J.S. McCarthy Printers
The United Way team at J.S. McCarthy Printers consistently leads an impressive fundraising effort. This year, by hosted several campaign meetings—increasing engagement with staff and hand labeling pledge cards to achieve a 35 percent increase in workplace giving. Campaign Managers are the driving force behind the success of any campaign, and the enthusiasm and dedication of this group powered a successful effort.
NORM TEMPLE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARD
United Way's Emerging Leaders Society
This award is presented to a group or individual in recognition of exceptional community service. This year, United Way honors the Emerging Leaders Society (ELS), which increased its overall volunteer hours from 530 to 1,150. ELS also grew in membership, now containing more than 50 young professionals in the Kennebec Valley region. The award is named for Norm Temple, an outstanding community leader and volunteer with United Way and other local organizations.
