2018 Cornerstone Partner: MaineGeneral Health
MaineGeneral Health’s mission to enhance the health of people in the community extends well beyond the walls of its facilities. As a decades-long supporter of United Way programs, MaineGeneral and its staff will contribute a total of $80,299 to improve the well-being of local people in 2018—a 55 percent increase over last year’s contributions.
Through a corporate gift and donations from many generous employees, MaineGeneral again positions itself as one of United Way’s 12 Cornerstone Partners, which collectively make up more than 53 percent of UWKV’s annual campaign. This is the second year of the recognition program.
Chuck Hays, President & CEO of MaineGeneral Health, and his wife Maria, a professor at the University of Maine at Augusta, served as United Way’s 2017 campaign chairs, committing leadership, time and support to mobilize the caring power of our community. After considering that nonprofits’ requests for United Way funding had exceeded available dollars last year, the Hays family issued a significant challenge to the community—work together to increase last year’s $1.55 million campaign by 5 percent. Together, UWKV supporters exceeded that goal, raising the overall campaign by 7 percent to a total of $1.7 million.
“Maria and I were honored to serve as campaign chairs this past year,” said Chuck. “It meant so much for us to support the United Way of Kennebec Valley because the funds raised directly impact our entire community. We are also proud to see increased support from MaineGeneral employees to the United Way of Kennebec Valley, another tangible representation of our staff’s commitment to improving the lives of all the residents of the Kennebec Valley.”
Maria Hays now serves as chair of United Way’s Board of Directors and participates on several UWKV subcommittees. Each year, many hospital employees volunteer for United Way’s Allocations Committee to apportion funds to programs that address basic needs, financial stability, health and education.
MaineGeneral Health is an integrated, not-for-profit health care system that provides a wide range of services throughout Kennebec Valley. MaineGeneral opened a 192-bed, state-of-the-art hospital—the Alfond Center for Health—in Augusta in 2013. The health care system includes a regional cancer center; primary care and specialty physician practices; long-term care facilities; rehabilitation; home health care and hospice services; specialized care for people with memory loss; community outreach programs; and retirement living options.
In addition to facilitating a successful annual campaign, MaineGeneral hosts the United Way’s Food Pantry Project, for which employees generously collect non-perishable items to supply to local food banks. Over the past five years, hospital staff have donated 255 grocery bags of food, joining United Way’s elite 100 Bag Club earlier this year. MaineGeneral also supports Day of Caring, UWKV’s annual event that connects student volunteers from 15 local schools with work projects throughout Kennebec Valley.
Beyond United Way, MaineGeneral forms strong partnerships with other area nonprofits to improve the well-being of people of the Kennebec Valley and the economic vitality of the region. These partnerships are essential to meet MaineGeneral’s overall mission of enhancing, every day, the health of the people of the community.
