Partner Program Spotlight - Goodwill Northern New England
The following is a success story from Goodwill Northern New England, a partner program of United Way. Your donations support this program and many others across the county.
A recipient of SNAP E&T benefits was referred to Goodwill NNE’s workforce services team through the Bread of Life Shelter. The participant was seeking assistance with housing and employment and was facing upcoming court dates related to a history of substance use. The career advisor and the participant met to identify his interests. They looked for an initial “good fit” job within walking distance or near public transit, and completed applications for positions at worksites where transportation would not be a barrier.
The career advisor also supported him in completing housing applications in Kennebec County and collaborated with other service providers in the area to further assist with his housing search. The participant ultimately found and accepted a position in the meat and seafood department of a local grocery store. He also received a housing voucher and found a suitable apartment. The participant completed his goals of finding affordable housing and entering employment, while also receiving external services for assistance with his substance use disorder.
With the help of his career advisor, he arranged a work schedule with his employer that allowed him to continue participation in a substance use program. He exited services with a good job, a safe place to call his own, and the support and flexibility to remain on his path to recovery.
