United Way of Kennebec Valley (UWKV) launched its 2026 fundraising campaign Wednesday at its Campaign Kickoff Breakfast, announcing $1,109,915 in early committed support toward its goal of $2,026,000.
More than 250 people attended the event, where 20 local businesses and nonprofits reported initial campaign results. This early total is part of UWKV’s broader 2026 campaign, which helps support 58 local nonprofit programs and reaches approximately one in three Kennebec County residents each year.
The 2026 campaign, themed “United Is the Way,” is led by Gardiner residents Katie Doherty, president and CEO of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Chris Doherty, a golf professional at Brunswick Golf Club.
“We took on this role because we believe in the kind of community United Way helps create: one where people look out for one another, where families can find support when they need it, and where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” said Katie Doherty. “As parents raising our family in this community, these values are especially meaningful to us.”
During the breakfast, the Dohertys shared that the 2026 campaign will focus on advancing youth opportunity, helping ensure all local children have the resources, relationships, and experiences they need to learn, grow, and build bright futures.
The Dohertys also premiered UWKV’s 2026 campaign video, featuring Juliana, a Boys & Girls Clubs of Kennebec Valley alum. Juliana later spoke to attendees about how a United Way-funded scholarship enabled her and her sister to participate in Club programming while easing financial pressure on their single mother.
“My mother has always worked incredibly hard. Accepting that she needed assistance was not easy for her. But the United Way scholarship allowed her to accept that help while still knowing she was doing everything she could for her children,” Juliana said. “That scholarship opened doors for me. It allowed me to participate in experiences that changed the direction of my life.”
In Kennebec County, 35% of households struggle to make ends meet. UWKV responds by investing in local nonprofit programs and pursuing long-term, community-driven solutions that expand financial stability, health, and youth opportunity.
To help meet these needs, campaign co-chairs Katie and Chris Doherty have issued the “26 for 26” challenge, with a goal of raising $2,026,000 in 2026. Donors are encouraged to give $26 for the first time, increase their gift by $26 per paycheck, add $1 to each biweekly paycheck, or contribute any additional amount that is meaningful to them.
UWKV encourages Kennebec County residents, businesses, and organizations to donate, advocate, and volunteer in support of the 2026 campaign and help prove United Is the Way.
